Award Recipients

Co-founding the Tribeca Film Festival might qualify one as Entrepreneur of the Year. Or co-founding the Disruptor Foundation. Or co-founding two real estate investment firms. Or creating a publication and media company and writing best-selling children鈥檚 books with your daughters. Or writing a rock opera about Galileo. Or being chosen as the creative muse of for-profit and not-for-profit boards. Or just thinking deeply about how to make the world a better place.

Consider Craig Hatkoff on all counts.

A Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude 新澳彩开奖结果 graduate who majored in sociology and anthropology, Craig earned his MBA from Columbia鈥檚 Stern School and entered the world of finance at Chemical Bank. After pioneering real estate securitization, he co-founded merchant bank Victor Capital Group, and later Capital Trust.

Among the friendships and acquaintances he made during those days was actor and New York City icon Robert De Niro. When terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in 2001, Craig and De Niro and Jane Rosenthal conceived the Tribeca Film Festival to bring New Yorkers and others back into the streets of their city. In less than a year they had staged the first of what has become one of the country鈥檚 major film festivals.

With Harvard鈥檚 Clayton Christensen, he founded the Disruptor Foundation, which presents Disruptor Awards to those whose innovations, said Craig, 鈥渉ave had a profound positive impact on society.鈥 In 2017 the awards were presented in Hiroshima, Japan, to connect Ground Zeroes there and in New York.

In 2010, 新澳彩开奖结果 Magazine featured Craig鈥檚 Turtle Pond Publications, whose issues include children鈥檚 books coauthored with his daughters Isabella and Juliana, among them the NYTimes best-seller Owen and Mzee.
In 2016 he told students attending the Robert Fox Leadership Lecture: 鈥淗aving a set of skills that allows you to inspire people is, to me, the most interesting aspect of leadership.鈥

For a 2020 alumni panel on creativity and innovation, he observed: 鈥淓veryone is talking about big data, but what we really need to focus on is the search for big wisdom.鈥

Craig Hatkoff, a self-described ambidextrous thinker who said he began to integrate arts and science as a student at 新澳彩开奖结果, is the University鈥檚 2024 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Britty O鈥機onnor was once a teacher who baked. With bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees from 新澳彩开奖结果, she was teaching middle and high school English and baking treats for her students in New York鈥檚 Hudson Valley.

Summers she returned to Hamilton to be with her husband-to-be, Brendan (新澳彩开奖结果 鈥09), who was running an organic farm. In the farm鈥檚 kitchen, Britty baked bagels, pastries, and cakes for sale at the weekly Farmers鈥 Market, as well as to 新澳彩开奖结果 and a clientele of Hamiltonians.
A local alum offered Britty the first floor of the historic property he was restoring downtown. 鈥淚f I鈥檓 going to try something, I go in with both feet,鈥 said Britty. She left teaching and signed a five-year lease. In summer 2016 Britty and Brendan opened Flour & Salt Bakery and Cafe (F&S) on Maple Avenue. Response was over the top. The bakery sold out most days by 3:00. The cafe was so popular with townspeople, students, and alumni that it became the unofficial second office of Hamilton鈥檚 mayor.

Then came the pandemic. But with a customer base and a website to support its robust take-out business, Flour & Salt weathered the challenge and kept all its employees. Britty, who believes a community of businesses strengthens all members, helped four other local merchants establish point-of-sale systems.

For someone with imagination, transitions create opportunities. Two years ago, at the historic Roth Building on Madison Street, Britty and Brendan opened MOM鈥檚, a friendly tavern. And when a storefront came open on Lebanon Street around the corner from the bakery, F&S moved in with its cafe and sandwich shop and converted the old location to full-scale production of breads and baked goods.

Community has always been central for Britty, who started a writing program for Hamilton high schoolers when she was a student. A member of the Hamilton Business Alliance (HBA) since she opened F&S, Britty is HBA鈥檚 newly elected 鈥 and clearly committed 鈥 president. Meanwhile, online, Britty is the face of posts that feature F&S, MOM鈥檚, her family (including two-year-old Sloane), and tips for other entrepreneurs. And she鈥檚 a dynamic force on campus, whether counseling future entrepreneurs through TIA, or baking special orders, such as an 18-foot-square Bicentennial birthday cake.

鈥淏usy? Apparently, that鈥檚 how I like it,鈥 said Britty O鈥機onnor, an energy and idea center in the Hamilton community, and 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Successful entrepreneurs embody some mix of energy, intelligence, enthusiasm, optimism, confidence, imagination, courage, creativity, and focus. Sian-Pierre Regis鈥 particular blend results in what one 新澳彩开奖结果 admirer calls a 鈥渃ool factor鈥 that comes across not only on screen and in his writing, but also in the encouragement and coaching that he provides for students aspiring to strike out on their own.

Most recently Sian-Pierre has been writing, directing, and producing the independent documentary Duty Free, a mother-and-son tale that explores universal themes of aging in a most personal way.

Sian-Pierre was growing his own on-line magazine, Swagger, and reporting lifestyle and social-responsibility stories for outlets such as CNN, Headline News, and MTV when his single Mom called to say she had been fired from her longtime job as housekeeping manager for a Boston hotel. Even as he helped his 75-year-old mother search for work in the 21st-century marketplace, he set out to fulfill her 鈥渂ucket list鈥 of deferred dreams as a means to restore her spirit and repay the sacrifices she had made for him and his brother.

As Sian-Pierre films and narrates, his mother milks a cow, skydives, and reunites with her daughter and brother, among other adventures. With skillful editing, his mother鈥檚 running commentary and reflections become a treatise on aging in America. After premiering on PBS鈥檚 Independent Lens, the film is showing in theaters and online. National media and major networks from CBS to The New York Times to Forbes to AARP Magazine (in a story by Lee Woodruff 鈥82) have covered the journey.

As a student, Sian-Pierre鈥檚 energy and presence foretold his entrepreneurial spirit. A George Cobb Fellow, he tutored local students, wrote for The Maroon-News, volunteered in Admission, and was president of the Senior Class Council on the way to earning honors in sociology and anthropology and graduating magna cum laude. A dozen years later 新澳彩开奖结果 awarded him the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

Sian-Pierre is a Real World regular and Thought Into Action mentor who sponsors student interns. In his 2016 keynote address to Sophomore Connections, he told the Class of 2018 to 鈥渇ollow your gut鈥e鈥檙e all here for a reason鈥nd we get screwed up when we think it鈥檚 tied to a paycheck.鈥

Sian-Pierre Regis is 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 2022 Entrepreneur of the Year.

When Nick Kokonas graduated from 新澳彩开奖结果 three decades ago 鈥 Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude in philosophy 鈥 the idea of making a paycheck 鈥渟eemed so limiting.鈥 So he passed on interviews at investment banks, withdrew from Penn鈥檚 law/PhD program, and learned to trade derivatives.

He said of the eleven months he collected a paycheck: 鈥淸It was] always with an eye to it being a path to knowledge, not money.鈥 Through the 鈥90s he built and merged his own firm, innovating with traders in Chicago and New York. Events at the turn of the 21st century 鈥 including his father鈥檚 passing and the terror of 9/11 鈥 gave pause to reflect.

While taking stock of what to do next, Nick became friends with chef Grant Achatz. Together they conceived the restaurant Alinea, which they opened in Chicago in 2005, acclaimed variously as Best Restaurant in the US, North America, and the World. Alinea Group has expanded to five signature restaurants and bars with five more in development, each designed to provide diners, in Nick鈥檚 words, 鈥渁n emotionally resonant moment.鈥

Using Alinea Group鈥檚 restaurant 鈥淣ext鈥 as the prototype, Nick went beyond traditional, online reservation services to build a system that essentially tickets a table and time, improving patron contacts while maximizing restaurant resources. In 2014 Nick made the service 鈥 Tock 鈥 available commercially. Tock was managing customer contacts for 7,000 restaurants in 30 countries when it was purchased in March 2021 by the website-hosting service Squarespace. Nick continues as Tock鈥檚 CEO.

The onset of COVID-19 proved Nick鈥檚 ability to convert crisis to opportunity. He pivoted Alinea to take-out and went from daily serving $300 meals to 100 people to boxing $30 meals for 1000 people. Tock-To-Go extended that capability to the thousands of restaurants in Nick鈥檚 client base, saving countless jobs and businesses.

Of the liberal arts as grounding for an entrepreneur, Nick said: 鈥淓nglish literature, art history, and science were all equally as important to doing business as any economics class I ever took.鈥 He values lateral thinking, a willingness to 鈥渆mbrace risk and responsibility,鈥 and a mindset that considers a paycheck a limitation, not a goal. He generously shares his wisdom and experience with 新澳彩开奖结果 folks who reach out. Nick鈥檚 wife Dagmara [Ceprutis] 鈥91, a milliner, is an entrepreneur in her own right.

We are pleased to honor Nick Kokonas as 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 2021 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Seven years ago on E Weekend, senior Maggie Dunne 鈥13 gave a 鈥淟ittle Talk about Big Ideas鈥 describing the non-profit she founded to enrich the lives of kids on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. David Fialkow 鈥 a TIA advocate and mentor 鈥 was in the audience. On the spot and by personal example, he raised $25,000 to help Maggie serve Native American kids.

鈥淚 love working with creative people and helping them make a difference,鈥 David says on the website of General Catalyst Partners, which he co-founded 20 years ago, and where he serves today as managing director. David and his partner Joel Cutler built and sold four companies before starting General Catalyst, a venture capital firm that makes early-stage and transformational investments in a portfolio of well-known or soon-to-be-well known companies.

In investment circles, David is known for his 鈥淢idas touch鈥 identifying and nurturing talent and growing new business. Associate Vice President for Career Initiatives Michael Sciola said: 鈥淒avid is one of our most successful examples of someone drawing on his 新澳彩开奖结果 experience to bring new solutions into the world.鈥

An avid athlete, David has raised millions of dollars to support children鈥檚 programs by biking, running, climbing, and rowing. He was board chair of the Pan-Mass Challenge, which supports cancer research.

Over the years David has shared his experience with 新澳彩开奖结果 students and alumni as an adviser and presenter for TIA. He鈥檚 spoken and secured other headline presenters for E Weekends. He has hosted interns and Day-in-the-Life visitors at his Cambridge offices. And he traveled to San Francisco to join a distinguished panel at a weekend event launching a professional network of 新澳彩开奖结果 folks working in Digital Media and Technology.

In a foray into documentary film-making, David recently produced the Academy Award-winning Icarus, an expos茅 into blood-doping among Russian athletes.

David holds a juris doctor from Boston College Law School in addition to his bachelors from 新澳彩开奖结果. He is a generous supporter of 新澳彩开奖结果 whose gifts helped fund the Class of 鈥65 Arena and endow the men鈥檚 hockey coaching position.

David Fialkow makes things happen. We are proud to recognize him as 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 2020 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Robert Johnson believes two essential qualities of an entrepreneur are optimism and stubbornness. When did he know he had those qualities? 鈥淢y parents would say I鈥檝e been stubborn since Day One.鈥

Robert started his first software company in eighth grade, and another in high school. 鈥淣either of them did that well,鈥 he admits.

At 新澳彩开奖结果 he developed skills and experience that helped him succeed. 鈥淎 liberal arts education is exactly the foundation you need to be an entrepreneur,鈥 he said. A psychology and computer science major, he learned to manage people and operations while working at CUTV.

Back home in Dallas after graduation, Robert joined a startup software company, Sundance Digital, that automated control of TV stations. He became majority owner, developed the company to industry prominence, and sold it to Avid Technologies in 2006.

From the early 2000s he also co-owned an East Texas oil company, which he sold to Canadian interests in 2011.

In 2008 Robert founded the cloud-based B2B software company TeamSupport to help companies improve customer service. He continues today as CEO.

Robert is also a mentor/investor with venture funds such as Tech Wildcatters and Blossom Street Ventures.

On campus, Robert provides leadership and vision for the next generation of 新澳彩开奖结果 entrepreneurs through programs such as SophoMORE Connections, A Day in the Life, and Thought Into Action.

Robert is a 新澳彩开奖结果 Trustee and a director on the Alumni Corporation Board, and often pilots his own plane to meetings. He and his wife and classmate Kelly are Presidents鈥 Circle members and past presidents of the Dallas Alumni Club. They are parents of teenagers Nick and Carlyn.

We are proud to recognize Robert Johnson as 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 2019 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Katie Finnegan remembers fretting to her father about career decisions. 鈥淒o what you鈥檙e passionate about and everything else will follow,鈥 he told her.

Over the 13 years since Katie earned a degree in history and religion, Dad鈥檚 advice has been her inspiration. Today, as principal and founder of Store No 8, she is leading an effort to seed and develop the next generation of business ideas.

Store No 8 is backed by Walmart, the world鈥檚 largest private employer, where Katie is vice president for incubation.

Just six years ago, parents and alumni attending 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 first Entrepreneur Weekend saw the promise in Katie鈥檚 pitch for an online shopping service and helped launch her career as an entrepreneur.

She left that weekend with pledges of enough financial backing to quit her position with a global consultant and devote herself full time to developing Hukkster. Within a year, her startup was being hailed by Time magazine, Fashion Group International, and The Business Journal.

As happens with good ideas in the startup world, Jet.com bought Hukkster.

And then 鈥 when Walmart peered into the future and saw where business is headed 鈥 the company acquired Jet.com and Katie to help lead them there.

Katie鈥檚 mother says 新澳彩开奖结果 taught her daughter to think critically. In giving back, Katie has served on the Alumni Council, raises support for the Presidents鈥 Circle, volunteers for her class, counsels students about careers, and fosters the college鈥檚 network of entrepreneurs. 鈥淵ou find the time if it鈥檚 important to you,鈥 she said.

In 2010 Katie Finnegan won the Ann Yao Young Alumni Award. In 2015 she won a Maroon Citation. And this weekend we recognize her as 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Oak Atkinsion鈥檚 mission for Tumbalina is 鈥淭ouching hearts, one by one,鈥 which she achieves by designing 鈥渙ne-of-a-kind gifts of caring.鈥

Growing up in Masaka, Uganda, Oak created handmade collage cards to celebrate the special occasions and achievements of family and friends. Years later, and a world away, that same personalized sentiment is at the core of Oak鈥檚 thriving business, which serves the greetings and announcement needs of customers online and at retail locations across the country and around the world.

After graduating from 新澳彩开奖结果 with a degree in fine arts and history, Oak worked in marketing for several national brands, earning an MBA from Fordham along the way.

In 2003 she 鈥渇ollowed her dream and created Tumbalina.鈥 In the intervening years she has grown the business from a small core of crafters in her hometown of Bedford, New York, into an award-winning paper-goods company that harnesses the expanding capabilities of technology to reach a global market. The Greeting Card Association鈥檚 鈥淟ouie鈥 that honored one of Oak鈥檚 humorous birthday card designs is the industry equivalent of an Oscar.

As a mentor in 新澳彩开奖结果鈥檚 Thought Into Action program, Oak travels back to campus to coach aspiring undergraduate entrepreneurs. 鈥淩efuse to fail,鈥 she tells them. 鈥淥nce you take failure off the table, you have only one way to look.鈥 Helping students to achieve is as important to her as it is to them, she says.

For her visionary approach, her determination, imagination, creativity, and the model she provides for those who would follow her path, the 新澳彩开奖结果 Alumni Corporation is pleased to honor Oak Atkinson as its 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year.

From the corporate headquarters of Craftsy in Denver, Colorado, CEO John Levisay and his fellow founders offer online classes in quilting, sewing, knitting, cake decorating, crocheting, photography, cooking, and a variety of other skills to upwards of 10 million artisans around the world.

Flagged by Forbes Magazine the past two years as one of the nation鈥檚 100 most promising businesses, Craftsy has grown exponentially since John and his three partners launched their enterprise in 2010. Today, crafters can choose among more than 1,000 classes designed to let users learn at their own pace while interacting with expert instructors.

With a bachelors in history from 新澳彩开奖结果, John took a turn in commercial and investment banking and earned an MBA from Michigan before heading West to join eBay, where he helped launch eBay Motors.

Ten years later, as he told The 新澳彩开奖结果 Scene, the urge to set out on his own was fueled by a desire 鈥渢o create an online platform that captured the magic of a live classroom.鈥 In his favorite classes at 新澳彩开奖结果, professors acted as facilitators, he said. Craftsy aims to produce that same sort of interplay on the Internet.

John told the Denver Business Journal that Craftsy is a 鈥減roxy for a societal desire to use our time productively and engage in stuff that makes us better.鈥

For recognizing that need and finding a way to harness technology in service to users around the world, the 新澳彩开奖结果 Alumni Corporation is pleased to recognize John Levisay as its 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Pete Sheinbaum had been a not-so-good waiter, a better financial analyst, and a very good electronic commerce manager and computer consultant before he joined DailyCandy.com 鈥 the website that advised women about the best in 鈥渇ood, fashion, and fun.鈥 That鈥檚 when his entrepreneurial career truly took off.

The website for Techstars 鈥 a startup accelerator where Pete now serves as a mentor to other aspiring and promising entrepreneurs 鈥 describes the arc of his career at DailyCandy: from consulting on the website鈥檚 launch and development, to COO, to CEO, to guiding a smooth transition after DailyCandy鈥檚 successful sale to Comcast Interactive Media.

In Boulder, where he now makes his home with wife Laura and kids Zachary and Charlotte, Pete founded two additional tech startups, the most recent of which 鈥 LinkSmart 鈥 he sold in 2014. Just this year he was named chief operating officer of Ello, which describes itself as: 鈥...a revolutionary social network that is transforming how people connect, free from advertising, manipulation, and exploitation.鈥

Pete was an economics and philosophy major at 新澳彩开奖结果, a varsity soccer player, and president of Theta Chi as a senior. His MBA is from the Anderson School at UCLA.

When Pete and his fraternity brother Greg Blatt 鈥90 were featured at an installment of 新澳彩开奖结果 CEO Conversations, Pete coached young entrepreneurs to be patient and keep their focus. 鈥淕etting really big really fast,鈥 he said, can be 鈥渁 recipe for disaster.鈥 When approached by a party interested in acquiring your company, Pete advised, 鈥...ask tough questions. Will employees be taken care of? Will you be able to continue the creative spirit that鈥檚 behind your organization?鈥

Sage advice from an entrepreneur with a growing record of successes.

Peter Sheinbaum is the 2015 新澳彩开奖结果 Entrepreneur of the Year.

In June 1996, on his 30th birthday, a month after his eighth 新澳彩开奖结果 reunion, Warren Adams quit his management-consulting job at London-based Mitchell Madison Group to pursue an idea that first occurred to him as a 新澳彩开奖结果 junior: through the Internet he would create a directory that allowed users to keep track of their friends.

Over the course of the next two years, working around the clock from an office in a parish building just off Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Warren ran the business and arranged the financing as colleagues developed the technology to launch PlanetAll.com. By the time Amazon bought the rights to PlanetAll in August 1998 for roughly $100 million in stock, it had grown to 45 employees and more than two million subscribers. (Mark Zuckerberg was 14.)

Warren then did a turn in Seattle, initiating and launching Amazon鈥檚 wireless shopping division, but was soon off on his own again, advising and investing in bold new ideas through his Vineyard Ventures fund, based on Martha鈥檚 Vineyard.

Inspired by the natural beauty of Chilean Patagonia, in 2007 Warren established Patagonia Sur, a for-profit model for acquiring, conserving, and protecting large tracts of ecologically sensitive habitat there. 新澳彩开奖结果 and Harvard, among other universities, are investors in carbon offsets that help to sustain the effort.

In addition to his degree in psychology from 新澳彩开奖结果, Warren holds an MBA from Harvard. He has advised and encouraged undergraduate entrepreneurs, and engaged 新澳彩开奖结果 students, faculty, and staff in hands-on sustainability in the Chilean forest.

Megan Weeks was working on a different start-up in the same building where Warren launched PlanetAll. Somehow they found time to start a relationship that led to a marriage that led to a family that now includes three daughters.

Warren Adams is the 2015 新澳彩开奖结果 Entrepreneur of the Year.

If you are one of the five million people who daily play the games DragonVale, Paper Toss, NinJump, or Ragdoll Blaster on your mobile device, then you鈥檙e personally familiar with Julian Farrior鈥檚 work as founder and CEO of Backflip Studios.

A double major in art history and economics, a Beta, and half of a 新澳彩开奖结果 couple, Julian told the alumni and parents at a Silicon Valley technology event in December that the broad education he received here helped him become a successful entrepreneur.

Professor Mary Ann Calo says the senior thesis Julian wrote about the alignment of the art and commodity markets in the 1980s 鈥渟tretched鈥 her as an adviser and influenced the way she teaches classes on contemporary art. 鈥淚t was the first thesis I had that really looked at the impact of the art market,鈥 she recalls.

In his keynote address a year ago to aspiring entrepreneurs in the Class of 2015, Julian advised: 鈥淥pportunity is not linear; ... you always have to be attuned to and looking for those opportunities that will catapult you to the next level.鈥

That advice drew on years of experience. Julian joined a fledgling Yahoo! in 1999 and seven years later was heading the firm鈥檚 search for emerging markets. He was a vice president and angel investor in the app developer Earthscape before yielding to his inner gamer in 2009 to found Backflip 鈥 a majority share of which he鈥檚 just sold to international play and entertainment company Hasbro.

Recently, Julian applied his entrepreneur鈥檚 instincts as an investor and adviser in early-stage tech startups TapToLearn, Pepper Data, BabyBytes, and P2B Investor.

He鈥檚 a modern visionary, a Hall of Fame mobile game developer, and a frequent speaker at leading industry conferences.

And today he becomes the 新澳彩开奖结果 Alumni Corporation鈥檚 first-ever Entrepreneur of the Year.
