Weekend Update: Enjoy jazz, chocolates and art at Picker

Valentine’s Day weekend won’t leave you strapped for things to do at аIJʿª½±½á¹û.  Check out some of the events happening this weekend and kick off your holiday weekend on  аIJʿª½±½á¹û’s favorite day: Friday the 13th!

The Picker Art Gallery will host an evening of jazz music, fine art, and loads of chocolate from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. The Rick Montalbano quartet will be performing, with Montalbano (piano), Jimmy Johns (drums), John Rohde (saxophone), and Marcus Currie (guitar).  The group will play a variety of jazz favorites.  On view at the Picker is Felrath Hines: Abstract Illusions Paintings 1979-1992, and Abstract Improvisations: Paintings by Jeff Donaldson.  The event is free and open to the public.

The Student Committee On Providing Entertainment (SCOPE) is hosting the group Plus/Minus, an indie rock band with electronic influences, as well as El Guapo, a group that promises ‘brash art-punk for the post-millennial dance floor.’  Doors open at 6 p.m. Friday for the show at Donovan’s Pub in the Student Union.  Bring your аIJʿª½±½á¹û ID for free admission.

Urban Theater will present Journey at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Brehmer Theater.  Directed by Sabrina Colie ’04, Journey is an experimental, theatrical documentary of the 400-year long slave trade of African peoples.

Movie buffs can check out The Filth and the Fury at 7 p.m. Friday in Golden Auditorium, Love Actually in Love Auditorium at 9 p.m., and the midnight flick of the week is Can’t Buy Me Love.  The midnight movie is $3 at the Hamilton Movie Theater.

Sporting events abound this weekend as the men’s hockey team takes on Yale on Friday night at 7 in Starr Rink, and hosts Princeton on Saturday night.  Also check out the men’s basketball team as they host Army at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Take your sweetheart to Winterfest at Whitnall Field and cheer on your friends as they take part in human foosball, sumo wrestling, and hot chocolate drinking.  Events will run from noon to 4 p.m.

Author Samina Ali will read from and sign copies of her novel Madras on Rainy Days  at 2 p.m. Saturday in the аIJʿª½±½á¹û Bookstore.  All are welcome to attend.

The аIJʿª½±½á¹û 13 will host a Valentine’s Day concert in Donavan’s Pub at 7 p.m. Saturday.

If you have eaten too many chocolates, go out and get some exercise Sunday by snowshoeing at Stoney Pond with the Outdoor Education program.  All necessary gear is provided, and the group will meet at Base Camp. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.  RSVP to Abby Rowe via e-mail or at x7972 before Sunday.

Head to the Chapel at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to hear Laura Klugherz (violin) and Steven Heyman (piano) present a program of works they have prepared for a conference in Uganda.  The event is free and open to the public.
