Organizing successful visit by ex-MTV correspondent

Back to All Stories

mhernandezstopp.jpgThis past week was incredibly busy. I was able to meet all of my friends’ parents during Family Weekend and President Bill Clinton also visited campus, which was an awe-inspiring experience.

The highlight of my week, however, was completing the final touches for the event that I and fellow students Danielle Bynoe ’14 and Catherine Min ’12 have been planning since the beginning of the semester.

As an ALANA ambassador, one of my responsibilities is to plan an event that relates to issues on campus. My friends and I decided to collaborate and bring SuChin Pak, a former MTV correspondent, here because we felt that she would be able to speak about her experience as an Asian-American in the media.

After weeks of planning we were able to bring her here, and she gave her speech on Wednesday. We also held a Brown Bag event about minorities in the media and how they are portrayed. We had a great turnout.

I never realized how much it takes to organize an event of this magnitude. I feel as though I learned so much about the process, and I am so glad that I was able to complete this task successfully.

KASA, the Korean American Student Association, Women’s Studies, Dean Charlotte Johnson, and Dean Keenan Grenell also participated in, and supported the event greatly.

I realize that student groups at °IJʿ are always willing to help each other. Through it all, I feel as though there is nothing I can’t accomplish here because faculty, staff, and fellow students are always willing to support.

This weekend I will be trying to stay warm and toasty.

On Friday I will catch the showing of Reservoir Dogs at Golden Auditorium in Little Hall. This is part of the 35mm Film Series that °IJʿ’s Student Film Society presents.

I will head down to the Philosophy Department symposium on Saturday at Merrill House, where the topic of “Acting for the Good” will be discussed. The symposium will be going on all day. After that, I will catch the football game — °IJʿ versus Lafayette. Go, Raiders!

Sunday I will go see the concert “Sassy and Swinging!” at the Memorial Chapel. I do love hearing the a capella groups we have here at °IJʿ.

(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at °IJʿ. Until next time!)
